Managing the Conversation Flow within a Bot

Wed 27 Feb 2019 06:15pm

If there's one challenge with conversational interfaces and bots, that has to be how effortless and smooth the interaction between
the user and the bot has to be.

The user shouldn't even feel like they're conversing with a program.

That's why thinking about how to handle the conversation flow when building bots is an essential task for developers.

In this talk, we will go through how to manage the conversation flow with Microsoft Bot Framework and dialogs.

Speaker Bio - Rabeb Othmani
Rabeb is a developer advocate at Nexmo focusing on cloud communication APIs and has experience building mobile and desktop applications while focusing on producing rich user experience.

Rabeb has presented at many prestigious software conferences such as VSLive, DevSum, Oredev, African Women In Tech Conference, NDC London and Women Who Code Connect, and is no stranger to user groups having spoken at groups in the UK and US.

Rabeb is passionate about cutting edge technologies and the impact technology has on people. She also advocates to bring more women into engineering an organises the Women Who Code Bristol meetup and has helped organise technology events and conferences.

Agenda - Wednesday 27th February 2019

1800 - 1825: Arrival and registration
1825 - 1830: Introduction
1830 - 1930: Managing the Conversation Flow within a Bot

Cryptonoise

Thu 28 Feb 2019 07:00pm

We will be meeting at 57North Hacklab to bring together like minded people, discuss digital freedoms and explore the use of cryptographic tools.

Discuss digital rights issues that are in the news. Learn how you can help to protect your rights in a digital world. Bring a smartphone or laptop and browse the web anonymously, learn about these technologies and chat about the reasons we need them.

• "Do average people really need this kind of security? Yes. They may be planning a political campaign, discussing taxes, or having an illicit affair. They may be designing a new product, discussing a marketing strategy, or planning a hostile business takeover. Or they may be living in a country that does not respect the rights of privacy of its citizens. They may be doing something that they feel shouldn't be illegal, but is. For whatever reason, the data and communications are personal, private, and no one else's business." -- Bruce Schneier, Applied Cryptography - Second Edition (https://www.schneier.com/book-applied-2preface.html)

Cryptonoise Aberdeen: Digital censorship in the UK

Thu 28 Feb 2019 07:00pm

Join us Thursday 28 February in Aberdeen when we'll hear from ORG’s executive director Jim Killock about the current state of digital censorship in the UK . We'll consider findings in ORG's new report on UK Internet regulation which reviews both formal and informal pracitices of digital censorship in the UK.

https://www.openrightsgroup.org/about/reports/uk-internet-regulation

When it comes to web blocking, the same rules do not apply online as offline. Many powers and practices the government employs to remove online content would be deemed unacceptable if they were applied to offline publications.

We'll cover the following:
Formal censorship practices

* Copyright blocking injunctions
* BBFC pornography blocking
* BBFC requests to “Ancillary Service Providers”

Informal censorship practices

* Nominet domain suspensions
* The Counter Terrorism Internet Referral Unit (CTIRU)
* The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF)
* ISP content filtering

There will be an opportunity to ask questions and to find out how to take action to fight digital censorship.

Working with Wikidata, Wikimedia and Wikipedia

Tue 19 Mar 2019 06:30pm

You have most likely heard of Wikipedia but what are Wikidata, Wikimedia or Wiki Commons?

In this session you'll learn about - and get to try - a range of tools that have been built by Wikimedia volunteers to enable both the easy visualisation of information and data, and to streamline the crowdsourcing of things like pictures of listed buildings.

This is a practical evening workshop hosted by Code The City, Dr. Sara Thomas, Scotland Programme Coordinator for Wikimedia UK, who will lead an introductory session on Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia. No experience is necessary.

This session is aimed at those with an interest in local history and culture, those who have a museums, galleries, libraries or archives background, or who just want to learn more about the Wikimedia projects and how they can get involved in improving existing data for Aberdeen and the North East. This will be an easy, informal introductory session.

You can bring a laptop or tablet to try the tools out - it's not absolutely essential but it will make it much more interesting!

This event is part of Data Fest 19's Fringe programme.
