Christmas Catch Up

Thu 20 Dec 2018 06:00pm

After the success of our “.NET and Natter” in the summer I thought it would be good to have a Christmas Catch Up as our last event for 2018. No agenda for this event, just a catch up and general geek out on all things .NET, some food and a drink or two. Venue will be BrewDog Castlegate and we have a space booked from 18.00 but please turn up when you can.

Christmas jumpers completely optional, but there might be a prize for the geekiest themed jumper. Please keep your RSVP up to date as we will be limiting number to ensure a suitable venue.

Cryptonoise Aberdeen

Thu 27 Dec 2018 07:00pm

We will be meeting at 57North Hacklab to bring together like minded people, discuss digital freedoms and explore the use of cryptographic tools.

Discuss digital rights issues that are in the news. Learn how you can help to protect your rights in a digital world. Bring a smartphone or laptop and browse the web anonymously, learn about these technologies and chat about the reasons we need them.

• "Do average people really need this kind of security? Yes. They may be planning a political campaign, discussing taxes, or having an illicit affair. They may be designing a new product, discussing a marketing strategy, or planning a hostile business takeover. Or they may be living in a country that does not respect the rights of privacy of its citizens. They may be doing something that they feel shouldn't be illegal, but is. For whatever reason, the data and communications are personal, private, and no one else's business." -- Bruce Schneier, Applied Cryptography - Second Edition (https://www.schneier.com/book-applied-2preface.html)

This event is co-organised by ORG Aberdeen and FSFE Aberdeen.

Talk 2 "Automated Artificial Intelligence" Dr Andy Starkey

The explosion of activity and interest in AI and machine learning has reached all industry sectors which has meant that the data scientists required to build these solutions are in high demand. He has over 20 years of experience in Artificial Intelligence and currently is supervisor of a number of PhD students who are all involved in work related to automated data analysis using AI techniques or autonomous learning. He has previously been involved in research work with AI that resulted in commercial licenses that won a number of industry awards. He is CEO of a spinout company from the University that specialises in automated data analysis using AI technology. He has recently won research funding for projects with Halliburton and WFS in the area of the application of AI technologies.
